Sesson 2 - Encouragement - The Key to Your Child's Self-Image
Lesson 6 - Is Your Child Discouraged?

Symptoms of Low Self-Esteem
Below are some signs that your child may be suffering from low self-esteem. It’s normal to display these symptoms some of the time. However, if you feel your child is displaying a pattern of these symptoms, your child may be discouraged and in need of extra attention. Refer to “22 Ways to Enhance Your Child’s Self-Image” earlier in this session. If they persist, talk with a therapist.
- Gives up easily
- Frequently uses statements such as: “I can’t”, “I don’t know”, “I don’t care”, or “I wish I were dead.”
- Seems withdrawn.
- Acts defensive
- Creates fights
- Complains that others pick on him
- Increasing misbehavior
- Has somatic complaints, such as stomach ache, headache, chest pain, dizziness, difficulty breathing, etc.
- Blames others
- Uses excessive excuses
- Wants to avoid social situations, such as school functions, parties, etc.
- Complains of having no friends, or simply has none

It is not always apparent when a child is discouraged. However, if you look closely, you’ll see little signs that your discouraged child is communicating to you that he needs some extra encouragement to feel better about himself.
