Lesson 3 – Emotional Bank Account

Steven Covey, author of "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People", gives the analogy of relationships as emotional bank accounts. He says that we are constantly making withdrawals or deposits to our accounts by our thoughts, words and actions. If we are not careful, we might overdraw our accounts, causing the people in our lives to feel like not cooperating with us. This concept applies to all relationships, whether it be with colleagues at work, friends, spouses or with our children.

Let’s see how this concept applies to our children. Below are examples of some ways we might do this with our children.

The next time your child misbehaves, ask yourself,

“How is my account with this child?
Is it full or overdrawn?”
