Many parents struggle with getting results (making dinner, finishing that report for work, getting your child to feed the dog) while maintaining loving relationships. They often feel mutually exclusive. Frequently, we value getting results more than how we feel about each other. In these cases, we may have won the battle with the child (gotten him to bed, brush his teeth, feed the dog), but we have lost the war. The relationship is disturbed….the child goes to sleep crying or kicks the dog out of the way as the dog gets fed.

We have got it all backwards when we make the result a higher priority than the relationship. When the relationship is intact, the results will happen more effortlessly. Children, spouses, and co-workers want to cooperate when the relationship becomes our priority.
