Before you begin, take a moment to understand the General Course Instructions.
Prerequisites
No prerequisites are required. However, it is recommended that you have available to you a copy of the book Redirecting Children’s Behavior as additional information in the book will be of value to you.
Meditation
A meditative visualization is available to you in the Introduction section.
Do not be deceived by the apparent simplicity of this meditative experience. If you think about the meditation, it will appear to you as if not much is happening except a pretty picture on the screen and a few words moving around. Allow yourself to get out of your mind about this and to simply watch and listen to what is being offered in the meditation and choose to absorb it at a non-cognitive level.
Some of the most profound message delivery vehicles are the simplest - music and a few words. The purpose of the meditations is to move past your cognitive processing center (which you call your brain) and into to your being.
Navigating the Course
To go from one lesson to the next, just click the links at the bottom of each lesson page. You may jump to an area of your choice at any time by clicking on the appropriate link in the course header.
Online Personal Journal
You get a personal online journal area with all the Sessions allowing you to capture your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with that lesson. The information you submit to your journal is saved in a secure data file in a secure database system, so all information stays private.
When you update each journal entry, two things happen. The information will stay in the entry field you typed it in and the information is sent to your private journal file. To view your private journal file, containing all journal entries submitted to date, click the "View Journal" link at the top of each lesson page. This will open a new window, showing all your journal entries. Make sure you scroll down to see your entries. To view a particular journal entry for a lesson, just click the journal link on that lesson and view or edit the information.
The puzzle pieces of family time, communication, support, encouragement, fun, closeness, team, cooperation, conflict resolution, love, values, and united parenting will be found throughout the lessons.
Much of this course is about discovery. After most sections in the course, you will find discovery questions. It may be tempting to just read them and move on, but you will receive more powerful and dynamic change in your household if you actually write your answers down. Likewise, if you take this course with a friend or partner, the benefits will be even greater.
In addition to taking the online course, there may be a physical “Redirecting Children’s Behavior” course in your area. It is helpful to take the course “live” because you will have your own personal instructor and the opportunity to share with others, which always deepens the experience. Be sure to check out www.redirectingchildrensbehavior.com for the local course nearest you.
Parenting is a tough job. It requires patience, invention, humor and tenacity with little or no ‘on the job’ training. The more support you arrange for, the less you will feel alone and the more courage you will have to make positive changes.
We have also added “Refrigerator Wisdom” throughout the course to help support you in your parenting journey. These are clips from the course that we feel might be helpful to print out and put on your refrigerator to help remind you, your family and other house guests to think and act in a more encouraging way.
Your first Refrigerator Wisdom (RW) is a disclaimer that you can put on refrigerator for all house guests to see. It reads, "The Family Puzzle in progress. Please pardon all imperfect communications!" Often when we start changing behaviors we are a little clumsy at first and can become quite hard on ourselves. Striving for perfection often puts unnecessary pressure on ourselves and others. This RW is a symbol for everyone to have fun with this challenging and miraculous system called "family." There is also a space to put a family picture.
Throughout the course you will see links that you can click with more information on the topic or that will link you to cute stories.
ENJOY!
